CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kent State scored three goals in a span of 15 minutes in the second half to claim a 3-1 victory over Cleveland State in an exhibition women's soccer match on Sunday night at Krenzler Field.

"This is why we play these exhibition games," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We saw some good things out there, especially with our attacking six late in the game. We were a little unorganized and shaky in the backrow tonight and let in a few easy goals.

"If we can continue to work on our shape and keep our form and technique, we will have the ability to do some good things."

Following a scoreless first half, the Golden Flashes got on the board just over seven minutes into the second half when Hannah Johnson took a pass from Josee Charron and beat CSU goalkeeper Shannon Saunders to the far post.

It was 12 minutes later that Kent State made it 2-0 when Emily Reno scored off assists from Jennifer Stapleton and Charron. Stapleton started the play with a pass from the end line to the corner of the box where Charron crossed to a wide open Reno. Three minutes later, Charron added to her two assists with a goal of her own, heading in a loose ball in front of the goal.

CSU senior Jennifer Wieand helped CSU avoid the shutout with a goal in the 69th minute. She beat KSU keeper Kelly Sherwood to a free ball outside the box as Sylvia Olsby sent in a ball to record the assist.

The goal seemed to light a fire under the Vikings as they came away with several good scoring chances late in the game, but could not convert.

The Golden Flashes outshot CSU, 13-9, while also finishing with an advantage in corner kicks (5-2).

The Vikings will open the regular season next Sunday (Aug. 24) with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Toledo at Krenzler Field.
