DOVER, Del. - Shayna Back and Sylvia Olsby each scored goals in the first seven minutes of the match and the Viking defense limited the Hornets to just two shots as Cleveland State improved to 2-3 with a 3-0 win at Delaware State on Sunday morning (Sept. 9).

The road win was Cleveland State's second in the last week and came after the Vikings had opened the year having gone 0-31-1 on the road in their first three seasons of competition.

"I am very happy with our performance this afternoon," head coach Derrek Falor said. "I challenged the team to play for each other and the fact that each of our three forwards scored a goal and assisted on one shows that the players took this to heart.

"We moved the ball very well within Delaware State's end of the field and that shows how well our offense is starting to play together. Each of the goals came from point blank range which is something that we haven't been able to do much in the past.

"Even though the foul count doesn't show it, this was a very physical match and I am proud that we were able to maintain our composure and focus on holding onto the lead and leaving with a victory," Falor added.

The Vikings stormed out of the box, taking a 1-0 lead just 4:49 into the contest when Shayna Back took a pass from Sylvia Olsby and scored from 10 yards out.

Just two minutes later, CSU made it 2-0 when DSU goalkeeper Courtney Haas couldn't control a Jennifer Wieand shot. Olsby pounced on the rebound and slipped it into the goal at the 6:55 mark.

The Vikings controlled the tempo of the match the entire way, outshooting Delaware State, 21-2 with Haas being called on to make eight saves in goal. CSU freshman Kelly Zinkiewich made just one save in goal in recording her first career shutout.

Cleveland State added an insurance goal in the 81st minute when Back fed Wieand on the run and Wieand beat the Hornet netminder from seven yards out.

The Vikings will close out their current four-match road trip this Friday (Sept. 14) when they play a 7:30 p.m. match at Akron. CSU then returns home on Sunday (Sept. 16) for a 1:00 p.m. contest against Canisius at Krenzler Field.
