IUPUI Outlasts CSU, 2-0

Sept. 12, 2004

STRONGSVILLE -- IUPUI used a goal in each half to claim a 2-0 win over Cleveland State on Sunday (Sept. 12) at Foltz Field.

The loss drops Cleveland State to 0-6 on the year while the Jaguars improved to 4-3.

"This was dissapointing because this was a team that we were capable of beating," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We didn't play with much heart today and it showed on the scoreboard. We had done a good job all season of coming to play for 90 minutes and for some reason, we didn't do that today."

"Offensively, we did a nice job of finding our forwards, either at their feet or through seams, but we weren't able to take advantage of it. We need to hold possession longer.

IUPUI opened the scoring at the 27:41 mark of the first half when Maggie Mistovich headed Kathryn Reuter's cross from the left side past Viking goalie Ashley Kidwell. The Jaguars then made it 2-0 when Samantha Sliney one-timed a cross from Sarah Leonard into the net at the 60:08 mark.

The loss spoiled a strong showing in the net by Kidwell, who earned her second career start. She made a career-high 11 saves in the net, including eight in the first half. Kidwell earned the start when injuries on defense forced Falor to move Allie Zajaros out of the nets and into one of the defensive slots.

"Moving Allie to defense was a move that I didn't want to make, but had to out of necessity. I knew that her skill as a defender would help to offset the loss of Rachel (Johnson) and Abbie (Kakias) and with Ashley Kidwell available to replace her in goal, we wouldn't miss a step."

The Vikings were outshot, 25-10. Jennifer Wieand led CSU with four shots while Samantha Casey added two.

The Vikings open a four-match road trip this week with a road contest at Canisius on Friday, Sept. 17.
