Jennifer Wieand Named Horizon League Player of the Week
Sept. 10, 2007 Contact: Brian McCann CLEVELAND, OH - After totaling eight points in three matches last week, Cleveland State junior Jennifer Wieand has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Monday (Sept. 10) afternoon. Wieand, who missed the entire 2006 season after knee surgery, completed her triumphant return by scoring three goals and adding two assists as the Vikings went 2-1 last week. She joins Lisa Conway (Aug. 28, 2006) as the only players in program history to earn league player of the week accolades. "This is a great honor for Jenny and I am extremely proud of her," head coach Derek Falor. "It's not a given to come back from an ACL injury, but she worked her tail off and I think she is a step or two better. Where she is at the beginning of the season is a testament to her work ethic. "Jenny is out there having a lot of fun playing the game," Falor continued. "She is pulling this team along and is really leading us as a captain." In a 5-4 overtime win at IPFW on Tuesday (Sept. 4), Wieand scored her first goal of the season with just 1:31 left in regulation to force overtime and then netted the game-winning goal with 6:51 left in the second overtime period. She also assisted on CSU's first goal of the match. Wieand's heroics helped the Vikings earn their first road win in program history, as well as the first overtime victory for CSU. For good measure, she did not stop there as she finished with a goal and an assist in Sunday's (Sept. 9) 3-0 win at Delaware State. Wieand is tied for the team lead in goals (3), assists (2) and points (8) with senior Shayna Back. The Vikings (2-3) will return to action with a pair of matches this weekend. CSU will travel to Akron for a 7:30 pm match on Friday (Sept. 14) before returning home to host Canisius at 1:00 pm on Sunday (Sept. 16) at Krenzler Field.
