CLEVELAND -- Cleveland State heads to Youngstown State for a three-game Horizon League series beginning on Friday (April 12). The Vikings will be looking to return to their winning ways after having their four-game winning streak halted by Detroit Mercy.
Cleveland State, which is 10-23 overall and 3-6 in the Horizon League, currently sits seventh in the league standings. The top six teams in the regular season qualify for the Horizon League Tournament and the Vikings are one game behind Green Bay for the final postseason berth.
Cleveland State extended its winning streak to four straight games with a three-game sweep of Green Bay last weekend, but saw that come to an end as Detroit Mercy completed a three-game sweep of the Vikings on Wednesday.
The Vikings duo of Kelly Hysong and Hanna Griffin have performed well in the circle in the last six games. Cleveland State has a 2.44 earned run average over that span as Hysong has a 1.88 ERA and Griffin has allowed 3.05 runs per outing. Green Bay and Detroit Mercy combined to hit just .213 against the Vikings in the past two league series and Hysong has limited the opposition to just a .179 batting average.
Paige Hartley has been red-hot at the plate over that same stretch as she is hitting .462 in the last six contests. She has three doubles, a triple and has scored three runs to raise her
Ries leads the Viking with a .330 batting average and 21 RBIs, while tying for the team lead with 11 doubles.
Hysong leads the Horizon League, and the Vikings, with seven home runs and she is tied with Ries for the team lead with 11 doubles.
Griffin is 6-10 overall on the season with a 4.74 ERA, while Hysong is 4-9 with a 4.57 earned run average.
The two teams will open the series with a single game at 7 p.m. on Friday and then conclude the three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 13) beginning at 1 p.m.
