Softball Announces Incoming Class

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland State softball head coach Amy Kyler announced the incoming class for the 2019-20 season on Wednesday, which includes three players from the state of Ohio.

"We are thrilled to have such a talented class joining the Viking Family," Kyler said. "These players will help grow our program academically and athletically. Each of these young ladies fit our program and have all the characteristics we are looking for as players."

Becky Hurosky, Katie Holmes, Sarah Carroll and Kaelin Ettinger will enter the fall as freshmen, while Courtney Fernette is a junior college transfer.

Brunswick, Ohio (Brunswick)

High School: Four-year varsity letterwinner at Brunswick High School…Earned First Team All-Ohio honors as a senior…Three-time first team all-conference selection…Three-time First Team All-Gazette selection…Set school career records for batting average, doubles, walks and runs batted in…Also set school single-season records for batting average and doubles.

Personal: Born Oct. 16, 2000…Daughter of Joe and Denise Hurosky…Has four brothers and a sister…Intends to major in mechanical engineering.


Katie Holmes


McKinney, Texas (Frisco Independence)

High School: Two-sport athlete at Frisco Independence…Lettered in softball and track and field…District champion in the shot put.

Personal: Born March 22, 2001…Daughter of Craig and Jennifer Holmes…Has one brother…Member of the National Honor Society…Plans to major in pre-physical therapy.


Sarah Carroll


New Philadelphia, Ohio (New Philadelphia)

High School: Four-year varsity letterwinner at New Philadelphia High School…Named First Team East Central Ohio League selection as a senior…Received the New Philadelphia Scholar-Athlete award.

Personal: Born on July 27, 2001…Daughter of Ken and Indira Carroll…Has three siblings…Member of the National Honor Society…Performed in the New Philadelphia marching band…Intends to major in marketing.

Painesville, Ohio (Notre Dame Cathedral Latin)

High School: First team all-conference as a senior…Earned second team all-district and second team all-county honors as a senior…Notre Dame Cathedral Latin offensive player of the year…Notre Dame Cathedral Latin athlete of the year.

Personal: Born January 27, 2001…Daughter of James and Carmen Ettinger…Has two brothers…Plans to major in civil engineering.


Courtney Fernette


Davis Junction, Ill. (Stillman Valley High School/Rock Valley CC)

Rock Valley CC: Two-time NFCA All-American selection…Batted .419 with 25 doubles, nine triples and seven home runs as a sophomore…Hit .442 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs as a freshman…Helped lead Rock Valley to a pair of national championships…Was named the NJCAA DIII offensive most valuable player of the national tournament in 2019.

High School: Attended Stillman Valley High School…Was a two-time all-state selection Three-time Big Northern All-Conference selection.

Personal: Born September 8, 1998…Daughter of Brian and Sondra Fernette…Intends to major in criminology.
