Final Stats

ELON, N.C. - The Cleveland State softball team split a doubleheader with host Elon College Wednesday afternoon, taking the first contest 5-3 but falling in the second, 4-1.

In the first contest, sophomore shortstop Michelle Beightol (Akron, Ohio/Springfield) cranked a three-run homer, the second of her career while freshman Michelle Nicholas (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) belted a triple. In addition, senior Jackie Miller (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) went 2-for-3 with a double and junior Stephanie Taylor (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) went 2-for-4 with a double. Junior Lindsay Gervais (Bucyrus, Ohio/Colonel Crawford) picked up the win, striking out four in seven innings of work.

In game two, CSU got on the board first in the second inning but Elon scored a pair in the bottom of the third and added another two in the bottom of the fourth. The game was called due to darkness after the top of the fifth. Phoenix hurler Amanda Zentner limited the Vikings to just two hits. For the Vikes, junior Jessica Miller (Medina, Ohio/Medina) gave up just four hits and two earned runs but the CSU defense committed six errors to account for the balance of runs.

CSU, 2-5, will return to action on Friday, March 16 at the Marshall University Tournament in Huntington, W.V. The Vikings take on the University of Dayton at 4 p.m. and follow with a matchup against Oakland University at 6 p.m.
