CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State led heading into the final two events but didn't have the depth to pull out the win in a 113-110 loss to Valparaiso in the season opener on Saturday (Oct. 21) at the Busbey Natatorium.

"We swam really well and had some younger people step up for us," head coach Mike Lehto said. "There are just some areas where we need some help."

Senior Marianne Lionell had a hand in three wins, capturing first place in the 200 free (2:00.09) and 200 breast (2:32.80) while also swimming the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay.

Clinging to a 10-point lead heading into the day's final event, the 400 free relay, CSU needed to finish second in the relay to preserve a one-point win. Valparaiso took both first and second in the relay event to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Sandra Bunker won the 1,000 free (11:11.17) and the 200 back (2:19.28) while twin sister Kristine and won the 400 IM (4:56.24). Sophomore Katie Bellew took first in the 200 fly (2:14.09).

The Vikings are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18 at UW-Green Bay.
