Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team cruised past the competition during the City College Meet, winning 12 races tonight. The Vikings topped Gannon 155-82.5, John Carroll 178-54 and Notre Dame College 177-51. "We had some spectacular times during tonight's meet from multiple people," head coach Wally Morton said. "We are in the middle of heavy training right now, and despite that we performed very well posting some good times." Carys Behn led the Vikings, recording three individual victories in the 1,000 free (10:24.84), 100 free (52.62) and the 50 free (24.58). Alice Sommerville, Joanna Olsson and Michelle Ferro each added two victories for the Vikings through the meet. Sommerville won the 200 free (1:57.89) and the 200 fly (57.75), while Olsson was close to setting another program record tonight, winning the 400 IM in 4:27.68 and the 500 free in 5:06.03. Ferro touched first in the 100 back with a time of 59.33 and the 100 breast in 1:07.71. "Multiple swimmers recorded personal and season bests for us tonight, including Michelle and Joanna," Morton said. "Overall I am very pleased with the outcome tonight and I am looking forward to Saturday when we can get back into league competition." The 200 medley team of Ferro, Sommerville, Emily Simard and Whitney Hickey recorded the only relay victory for the Vikings, ending in a time of 1:48.68.
Kacey Cummings placed first in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events, scoring 240 and 271.27 points respectively. Liz Victor placed third diving against Gannon and second going up against John Carroll with 204.07 points in the 1-meter board and 201.52 points in the 3-meter event. "The women haven't beaten St. Bonaventure in over 20 years, and I think that this season could possibly be the one for us," Morton said. "They are one of the strongest programs in the A-10 and will be a good contest for us going into the rest of the season." The Vikings return to action when they host Niagara, St. Bonaventure and Valparaiso on Saturday (Nov. 14) with diving starting at 12:00 noon and swimming starting at 1:00 p.m. |
