CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team continued play at the Viking Invitational Saturday, with Sian Payne and Kateryna Avram picking up singles wins.
"Today was a good day for us, I think as a team we took a huge step forward as we continue to get better and improve, which is what the fall season is all about," head coach Frank Polito said. "I thought Kate and Sian played some good singles matches today, and although Gaby and Lara weren't able to come away with wins, they took steps in the right direction in their games. In doubles, Lara definitely improved on the court and had a bounce back day today. I'm looking forward to the final day of our tournament tomorrow, and seeing if we can finish strong."
In singles action, Payne picked up her first win in a Cleveland State uniform, earning a 6-3, 7-5 victory over UConn's Cassie Chung. Avram's singles win came in a 6-4, 6-3 decision over UConn's Jackie Fitz-Randolph, marking her third singles win of the fall season.
Cleveland State will close out play at the Viking Invitational tomorrow (Sunday, October 7), with one round of doubles and one round of singles beginning at 11:30 a.m.
