MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the Martha Thorn Mountaineer Invitational Friday, having a successful day during doubles action.
Cleveland State split its doubles matches on the first day of action, with the tandems of Kateryna Avram and Klara Mrcela and Gaby Schoenberg and Lara Prosenjak picking up matching 6-2 wins over Duquesne, while Blanche Lenoan and Lauren Longo earned a 6-3 victory against Delaware. Lenoan and Longo's victory came after winning six straight games to bounce back from a 3-0 deficit to start the match.
"We played some pretty solid doubles today, getting good performances up and down the lineup, but I thought our top two teams really stood out with their level of play," head coach Frank Polito said. "
Schoenberg also posted the lone singles win on the day for the Vikings, as she earned a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(10) victory over West Virginia's Christina Jordan. Schoenberg now has a team-best four singles wins this fall.
"I thought as a whole, we played pretty well in singles today, despite some of the outcomes. Gaby was able to pick up a good win, while the trio of Kate, Klara and Lara played well in defeat. We are continuing to make improvements in singles play, and I look forward to seeing that progress continue tomorrow," Polito said.
Play will continue tomorrow (Saturday, October 20) at the Martha Thorn Mountaineer Invitational, with one round of singles and one round of doubles.
