Capozziello, Ungerott Score Wins Over Dayton
Jan. 28, 2005
WESTLAKE, Ohio - Sophomores Marcella Capozziello and Morgan Ungerott posted singles wins for Cleveland State against Dayton on Friday (Jan. 28), but the Vikings came up short against the Flyers, falling 5-2 at Five Seasons Racquet Club. CSU got a strong performance out of Capozziello at the No. 6 singles spot. After dropping the first set, 6-2, to Katie Cabanski, the Erie, Pa. native rallied back to take the next two sets, 6-3 and 6-1. Ungerott added a solid showing at No. 3 singles, sweeping Kate Mellion 6-4, 6-4. "Early on, I was being negative and not hitting shots like I could," Capozziello said. "[Volunteer assistant coach] Teresa Boylan kept me positive, and I was able to come back and find a happy medium between being too relaxed and too negative."
Capozziello and teammate Lindsay Sellers also added a win at No. 3 doubles, edging Megan Gray and Cabanski, 8-6.
"This match was a great improvement over last season," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "It's tough to learn through losses, but we are seeing progress. Morgan [Ungerott] played really well today after she got ahead, while Marcy [Capozziello] kept it together and was able to fight off some negative emotions to come back."
Cleveland State will be in action again on Sunday (Jan. 30) when the men's and women's teams host St. Bonaventure at River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River at 1:00 p.m. before the women battle Robert Morris beginning at 6:00 p.m. Dayton 5, Cleveland State 2
