Women's Tennis Splits Home-Opener Against Toledo, Robert Morris
Jan. 29, 2006
Rocky River, Ohio -The Cleveland State women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Toledo on Sunday afternoon before shutting out Robert Morris 7-0.
CSU got off to a rocky start in their home-opener against Toledo, going 1-5 in singles and 0-3 in doubles. Sophomore Jenn Myers upended Viviano Rivera 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2 singles for the Vikings only win.
"Jenn Myers is on a nice streak right now, winning three in a row, head coach Brian Etzkin said. "She came out of the gate playing well, fell into trouble in the second set, but found a way to get back into it."
Myers is now 4-1 in singles for the spring.
The Vikings were down one player on Sunday as freshman Abby Showalter has left the team indefinitely.
"Abby left the team for personal reasons and while we missed having her on the court today, we still had several opportunities to put points on the board that we should have taken advantage of and didn't," Etzkin said.
Cleveland State found its rhythm by Sunday evening, however, sweeping Robert Morris 7-0. Junior Sarah Galon and sophomore Christine Vogelsang both shut out the Colonials, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 6 singles.
In our second match we simply came out took care of business, said Etzkin. We won two out of three matches for the weekend which was our minimum goal so we're happy to have done that.
The Vikings return to action Thursday, Feb. 2 to host Akron before traveling to Niagara and Buffalo (Feb. 4-5).
