Rocky River, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team got out to a strong start against Akron and showed no signs of let-up as the Vikings claimed a 6-1 decision over the Zips on Thursday (Feb. 2) afternoon at River Oaks Racquet Club.

The Vikings took an early 1-0 advantage after taking two of three in the doubles matches. Juniors Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang held on for the deciding win at No. 3.

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 advantage thanks to two-set singles wins at No. 1 and 2 by Galon and Myers, respectively, but the match still remained in doubt after Akron's Laura Hemlepp notched a win at No. 5 and the three remaining matches were being closely contested.

Ungerott, however, would seal the Viking win at No. 3, however, holding on to notch a 7-5, 7-6 (3) decision. Sophomore Lindsay Sellers would add a tough-fought win at No. 4, rallying from down a set for a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5 win. Vogelgesang closed out the scoring at No. 6 with a three-set win of her own.

"This was the closest-contested 6-1 win I think I have ever been a part of," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We won today because of how hard we fought. We have players who are fighting injuries and playing hurt, but nobody complained. It takes all seven players, and we had that today. It was a good team effort.

"It was great to have Morgan [Ungerott] get the clinching point. She had been struggling lately, but things are starting to come together for her."

CSU swings through New York this weekend, taking on Niagara on Saturday (Feb. 4) beginning at 6:00 p.m. before battling Buffalo on Sunday (Feb. 5) at 1:00 p.m.
