Fort Wayne, Ind- The Cleveland State men's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 win over the IPFW Mastadons Friday evening, improving to 3-7 for the year.

The men started the evening strong with the No. 1 doubles unit of Jay Tee and Olivier Dhaine defeating Landry Nzudie and Nabil Mourad Filho 8-6. In similar fashion, Rob West and Dan Singer downed Carlos Gonzales and Arturo Salgado 8-5 at No. 2 doubles to secure the early lead.

In singles action, No. 1 Dhaine continued to lead CSU with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Landry.

"Olivier won on a day when he was not playing his best tennis so that proves just how strong of a player he is," said coach Brian Etzkin.

West and Singer also won for the Vikings at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively. West downed Filho 6-2, 6-1 for his first win of the spring, while Singer outplayed Salgado in a close 7-5, 6-3 match for the winning point.

"It was great to get the win but it sure wasn't easy to come by," said Etzkin. "IPFW has gotten better over the years, beating us 5-2 in the fall, so this win shows just how far we've come."

For the women, the No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott continued to dominate, downing Ashley Coulsen and Jessica Vervynckt 8-2. An 8-3 victory by Kristin Chamberlain and Linsday Sellers at No. 2 doubles put the Vikings up 1-0.

The tide changed in singles action, however, as the women won only two of their six matches. No. 1 Junior Galon defeated Sachi Janek 6-1, 6-2 at the top of the lineup while No. 6 Vogelgesang downed Vervynckt 6-1, 6-4 at the bottom.

"We definitely should have played better in the middle of our lineup and didn't," said Etzkin. "IPFW is a scrappy team and we didn't take care of the ball."

Vogelgesang is now 2-0 for the weekend after a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory over SEMO Friday afternoon.

"Christine Vogelgesang continues to play well for us," said Etzkin. "She has played a couple of tough matches lately and still managed to win. She just comes out focused and stays in every point."

The women will be back in action Saturday evening when they take on Oakland. The men will not play again until Mar. 4 when they host Chicago State.
