Cleveland State Women's Tennis Tops Oakland 6-1
Feb. 18, 2006
Fort Wayne, Ind.-The Cleveland State women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak Saturday evening with a 6-1 victory over Oakland. The Vikings dominated doubles play and came within one match of sweeping singles.
Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott pounded Teuta Lulgiurai and Jessica Erickson 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Lindsay Sellers and Kristin Chamberlain bested Amanda Scheer and Michelle Maxfield 8-7 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang downed Angela Trecola and Lauren Sanchez-Murphy 8-5.
At the top of the singles lineup No. 1 Galon ousted Lulgiurai 6-1, 6-1 and Myers nearly shut out Scheer at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1.
"I felt the women came out a little mad about yesterday and were very focused," said coach Brian Etzkin. "We got the early lead in doubles and singles and stuck with it. That's what we're working on doing more consistently."
Ungerott claimed a win at No. 4 singles after Maxfield, who was down 6-3, 4-1, retired in the second set. No. 5 Chamberlain also came up big with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Zacharski. At No. 6 singles Vogelgesang claimed her third win of the weekend, downing Murphy 6-3, 6-2.
"I'm feeling really good right now but I'm still just taking it one match at a time," said Vogeglesang. "I listened to coach, took his advice and things worked out today. I just hope the entire team keeps on going forward and we continue to have a winning season."
The women will play next on Mar. 4 when they host Chicago State.
