Women's Tennis Sweeps Illinois Wesleyan
March 14, 2005
Altamonte Springs, Fla. - The Viking women's tennis team cruised past Illinois Wesleyan early Monday (March 14) morning in Altamonte Springs, Fla., scoring a 7-0 win, but Bucknell ended the night on a down note, topping the women's team 7-0 and the men's team 5-2.
The women's squad opened up the morning in dominant fashion, sweeping the doubles point before scoring wins in all six of the singles matches. The evening session against Bucknell, however, was less kind to Cleveland State, as the Bison tallied wins against both the men's and women's teams. The men's team got out to an early lead with the doubles point, as the No. 1 team of Eric Winn and Paul Haley and the No. 3 team of Dan Singer and Jordan Reynolds posted victories. The Vikings were unable to come out on top in most of the singles matches, however, dropping a pair of three-set matches. The women could not carry their early day success against Bucknell either, as the Bisons claimed wins in both the doubles point and singles matches.
"The women's team took care of business in the morning," head coach Brian Etzkin said, "but we couldn't get things going against Bucknell tonight. They are a tough team, but we are capable of playing better. "The men's team had a chance to come away with a win. We played some close sets, but couldn't come out on top." The women's team wraps up their spring trip Tuesday (March 15) against Tiffin, while the men's team concludes their trip against Knox College on Wednesday (March 16).
