It was a youth movement in Bowling Green, as the Cleveland State women’s tennis freshmen led the way at the final day of the BGSU Invitational Sunday.

Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek had very strong performances, with both winning their final singles matches in Flight 3 and Flight 4 respectively. Janek also won her doubles match playing with Denisa Muntean, defeating Caputo/Henderson from IUPUI, 8-0.

“The freshmen led the way in terms of intensity and they competed against top competition,” assistant coach Jay Tee said.” The sky’s the limit for them and they’re in great position to lead Cleveland State for the next four years.”

The doubles team of Catrine Bjerrehus and Sanda Bjelan were able to hold off Bullock/Seng of IUPUI, 8-5, taking seventh in Flight 1.

Bjelan and Bjerrehus were unable to win their singles matches, though, as Bjerrehus dropped her match to Longeran of Cincinnati in three sets and Bjelan fell to Brien from IPFW, 6-4, 6-4.

“The girls played well today,” Tee said. “My biggest compliment is that they’re very coachable and really came through in the afternoon. We’re only going to get better from here.”
