Oct. 10, 2009 TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Viking women's tennis team concluded play in the Rocket Invitational on Saturday, returning to Cleveland with the knowledge that they are capable of reaching their goals next spring. "We got a good taste of the quality of teams that we will be competing against next spring and I think that we performed pretty well against it," CSU head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We played a little short because of an injury to Maria Lazaris, but we didn't let that faze us. "Our play so far this fall has allowed us to see that we will be there in the spring competing for the Horizon League title. We have some more work to do, but we are in the ball park right now." Viking senior Charlotte Gibbons was the stand out of the week for CSU, winning two of her three singles matches in the Gold Draw, defeating opponents from UIC and Toledo, and teaming with sophomore Katrine Bjerrehus to win two of their three doubles matches as well. In addition, freshman Nicole Janek had a strong weekend, winning two of her three singles matches in the Blue Draw, claiming victories over opponents from UIC and West Virginia. "Nicole is really playing hard right now and quickly making the adjustment to the college game," Etzkin said. "She is making the kind of plays that will help us in the long run"
