EVANSTON, Ill. - Cleveland State sophomore Catrine Bjerrehus and freshman Nicole Janek competed in the first day of action at the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Thursday at Northwestern University. Both players dropped their opening matches and were eliminated from the main singles draw. "I thought both players did some good things today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "It was good for them to have this opportunity to play against some of the top players in the region and will no doubt help them as they prepare for the spring season. We can no doubt take some positives from here." Janek began the day for CSU, falling in the first round to Yumi Matsuto of Western Michigan, 6-1, 6-1. Bjerrehus received a bye into the second round where she fell to DePaul's Kirsten Gambrell, 6-0, 6-7 (8), 6-1. Despite the losses in the singles draw, the CSU duo will return to action on Friday (Oct. 23) when they begin play in the main doubles draw. Bjerrehus and Janek will play a team from Ohio State in the first round with the match slated to begin sometime after 2:00 p.m. CSU RESULTS
