    FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of play with a pair of victories over IPFW and Murray State Saturday, claiming the IPFW Invitational title. The Vikings recorded a 3-0 sweep over the Mastodons and tallied a 3-1 victory over the Racers, improving their 2012 record to 3-0.

    Following the 3-0 weekend the Vikings put three players on the all-tournament team, including Kara Koch who was named the tournament MVP. Annie Djukic and Jackie Dabbelt also earned spots on the all-tournament team.

    Set scores against IPFW were; 25-23, 25-22, 25-17.

    Set scores against Murray State were; 25-19, 26-28, 25-20, 25-16.

    "I thought this was a solid first weekend for us, we certainly have things that we can work on in the next few weeks, but overall I thought we had a strong performance both offensively and defensively," head coach Chuck Vosssaid. "All weekend we had some new people on the court for us, and I think everyone played their roles well."

    Kara Koch led the Vikings offensively on the second day of the IPFW Invitational, combining for 32 kills in the two matches, while Marie Frease and Jackie Dabbelt each posted 19. Amanda Medvetz and Dayna Robertsled the CSU defense, notching 33 and 30 digs, respectively.


     

     

    In the first match of the day against IPFW Koch and Kerry Winchestereach tallied 11 kills, while the trio of Roberts (16), Koch (15) and Medvetz (15) combined for 46 of CSU's 68 digs. Frease posted five blocks, with Winchester adding a career-high four, including two solo blocks.

    Against Murray State, Koch recorded her first 20-kill match of the season, posting 21, while Dabbelt added 14 and Frease tallied 11. Annie Djukic notched a career-best 58 assists, while also adding eight digs and three blocks. Medvetz had a team-best 18 digs against the Racers, with Roberts adding 14 and Brittany Holland recording 12. Maggie Hannonnotched a career-high seven blocks for the Vikings, including three solo blocks.

    "Annie had a really solid weekend for us, guiding the offense and finding the open hitters allowing us to go on some runs," Voss said. "I also thought our group of seniors had a great weekend and I really think they are ready to compete this season and finish their careers on a good note."
