    MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule Saturday, earning a 3-0 sweep over Murray State and falling to West Virginia in five sets. The Vikings enter league play with an 8-5 overall record, while Murray State is now 2-6 on the year and West Virginia stands at 7-6.

    Set scores against the Racers were 25-18, 25-18, 25-14.

    Set scores against the Mountaineers were 21-25, 24-26, 25-18, 27-25, 15-12.

    Seniors Marie Frease and Kara Kochled the Vikings throughout the West Virginia Invite, Frease posting her fourth and fifth straight matches with double-digit kills and Koch combining for 38 kills to improve her career mark to 1,309. Following the two matches today, Koch now ranks fourth all-time on the CSU career kills list, and is one of only four Vikings to notch 1,300 kills on their careers (Jamie Bouyer-1,626, Tenille Whiteside-1,416, Beth Greulich-1,351).

    In the first match of the invite, Cleveland State cruised to a 3-0 victory over Murray State, defeating the Racers for the second time this season. Koch and Frease each tallied double-digit kills, Koch with 15 and Frease with 13, while Amanda Medvetz tallied 12 digs and Annie Djukicnotched 32 assists.


     

     

    In the opening set, the Vikings got out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. CSU held the Racers under 10 points for the entire first half of the frame, and allowed them to post back-to-back points only two times throughout the set. CSU posted two straight points to end the frame, including a Maggie Hannon kill and a Annie Djukicservice ace.

    The second set was much of the same, with CSU gaining a 19-11 advantage off of seven straight points. During that span the Vikings got points off of a Medvetz ace, two Koch kills and four Racer errors. After Murray State was able to fight off four set points, the Vikings finally closed the frame with a kill from Frease. Cleveland State then cruised to a 25-14 victory during the final set.

    Cleveland State dropped a hard fought five-set match against West Virginia to close out the invite, winning the first two sets and allowing the Mountaineers to claim the final three frames. Koch posted her sixth 20-kill match of the year with 23 against WVU, while Frease tallied 12 and Jackie Dabbeltadded 11. Djukic notched 44 assists, while the trio of Koch (25), Medvetz (13) and Djukic (10) notched double-digit digs.

    Cleveland State will open Horizon League play next week, as the Vikings are set to make their annual trip to Wisconsin. CSU will first face Green Bay on Friday (Sept. 21) and will then take on Milwaukee on Saturday (Sept. 22).
