Competing at the Horizon League Track and Field Championship for the first time in program history, the Vikings best finish at the championship came from sophomore Alexandria Derkacs who finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.43.
For the ninth straight season the Cleveland State cross country team has been honored for its academic success from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, as the Vikings were named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team earlier this spring.
After a week off from competition, the Cleveland State cross country team will return to action on Friday, November 11 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The women’s 6K race is slated for a 1:00 p.m. EST start at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis.
Cleveland State cross country junior Karen Barrientos earned First Team All-Horizon League honors Saturday morning, becoming the first-ever runner to earn First Team accolades under head coach Joe Jaketic. Barrientos finished the 2016 Horizon League Championship with a fifth place finish, posting a 6K time of 22:10.

The Cleveland State cross country team continued its 2016 season Saturday, running an unconventional 4.5K at the Storm Invitational. The course, which was originally slated to be run as a 6K race, was shortened to a short-course race.
Due to unfavorable weather conditions in the Southeastern part of the United States, the Cleveland State cross country team has had to change its race lineup for the upcoming weekend. The Vikings, who where supposed to run in the Disney Cross Country Classic this weekend, will now be competing at the Lake Erie Storm Invitational on Saturday, October 8.
For the first time under head coach Joe Jaketic the Cleveland State cross country team picked up an individual title, as Karen Barrientos won the LHU Invitational Saturday morning. Barrientos led the Vikings to a fourth place team finish, their second straight top-five team finish.

Saturday’s race, which is slated for an 11:30 a.m. start at the West Branch Cross Country Course, will be Cleveland State’s first 6K of the season.

After opening the 2016 season last weekend, the Cleveland State cross country team will continue its slate this Saturday, taking part in the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Cross Country Invitational. The women’s 5K race is slated for an 11:15 a.m. start at Cass Benton Park in Northville, Michigan.

For the first time over the last 12 years the Cleveland State cross country team hosted an alumni gathering last weekend, with over 15 former runners returning to the Cleveland area to enjoy an evening of camaraderie with current Viking runners.
