CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State cross country team will wrap up the 2017 season this weekend, traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The women's 6K race is slated for an 11:15 a.m. start at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
Cleveland State will be one of 34 teams competing this weekend, and one of eight Horizon League teams. The Vikings will be represented by eight runners at the NCAA Regional meet; Anna Brandt, Samantha Butterbaugh, Jessica Finely, Olivia Hammons, Emily Marshall, Samantha Meyer, Abbey Rojeck and Kylie Scott.
The top two teams in each region will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championship (18 total teams), while there will also be an additional 13 at-large team bids. In addition to the team qualifiers, there will also be 38 individuals selected to compete at the NCAA Championship - 36 will be automatic qualifiers from their respective regions (top four finishers not on a qualifying team) and two at-large selections.
Last Time Out...
The Vikings tied their highest finish ever at the Horizon League Championship, bringing home a fourth place finish out of the 10-team field. The Vikings were paced by two top-10 finishers and an additional pair of top-40 runners, tying their finish from the 2011 season.
Brandt Named Freshman Of The Year
After notching a seventh place finish at the #HLXC Championship - the highest finish for a true freshman - Anna Brandt was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year. Brandt, who crossed the finish line in a time of 22:52, was Cleveland State's top finisher and is the first Viking all-time to earn Freshman of the Year honors. Brandt's seventh place finish also earned her a spot on the All-Horizon League First Team - just the second Viking ever to earn the accolade.
Barrientos Picks Up Second Straight All-League Award
Senior Karen Barrientos became the first Viking all-time to earn All-Horizon League honors twice, picking up Second Team accolades after posting an eighth place finish at the 2017 #HLXC Championship. Barrientos, who recorded a time of 22:53 in this year's 6K race, also picked up First Team accolades last season as a junior.
