CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sophomore Jannis Schmidt of the Cleveland State University men's soccer team was selected as the Nike Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week in a league release Tuesday afternoon.
Schmidt played a key role as the Vikings opened the season with a 2-2 tie at No. 14 Louisville, factoring into both goals as Cleveland State got a road result against the defending ACC champions.
Facing a 2-0 deficit against the nationally ranked side with just 20 minutes to play, Schmidt sparked Cleveland State's rally by scoring his first collegiate goal, rifling a shot in from the top of the box. He then added the primary assist on the game-tying goal with under 10 minutes to play, and the Vikings held on to earn a draw at Louisville. Schmidt had a team-high three shots for the Vikings.
Schmidt has appeared in each of the 16 matches since he joined the program last year. His effort this past weekend was his first multi-point as a collegian.
This is the fifth consecutive season in which a Viking has earned a weekly honor from the Horizon League.
Cleveland State will be right back in action Wednesday night as it hosts Robert Morris in its home opener.
