ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Cleveland State volleyball team remained perfect in Horizon League play Sunday afternoon, picking up a 3-0 victory at Oakland. With the win, the Vikings are now 8-6 overall this season and 2-0 in #HLVB play.
Trinniti Hall and Hannah Greene led the Viking offense against Oakland, Hall with 16 kills and Greene with 10. Sara Skeens also added in nine kills, as the Vikings recorded a .327 hitting percentage as a team.
Hall also recorded a team-high eight blocks on the match, while Skeens added four and Christina Grecol tallied three.
Rachael Dohar finished with a team-best 18 digs on the match, helping the Viking defense hold Oakland to a .174 clip on the day.
During the opening set, the Vikings were able to get out to an early 7-3 lead, and then went on to hold this advantage for the rest of the frame. After holding a 10-7 lead, the Vikings posted six straight points to extend their lead to 16-7 on back-to-back blocks from Rachel Stover, Hall and Emily DeGeorge. Cleveland State controlled the momentum during the rest of the set then, earning the 25-18 first set victory on a DeGeorge kill.
The second set started out much the same, with Cleveland State earning a 10-5 lead early on, but Oakland was able to work its way back into the frame, eventually tying the set at the 17-17 mark. The Vikings responded with three of the next four points to gain a 20-18 lead on a Hall kill then, and after trading points with the Grizzlies over the next few plays, finally put the set away with a Sara Skeens kill for the slim 25-23 victory.
During the third set both teams traded points throughout the start of the frame, until Oakland gained a 16-10 advantage midway through the set. The Vikings bounced back with a 7-1 run though, tying the set at 17-17 on another DeGeorge kill. Oakland was able to retake the lead on the following point, but Cleveland State responded with five straight points to regain control and a 22-18 advantage. The Vikings then went on to clinch the set with a score of 25-20, capturing the 3-0 match victory.
Cleveland State will return home for a pair of Horizon League matches next weekend, hosting Northern Kentucky on Friday, September 28 and Wright State on Saturday, September 29.
