CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team picked up its first Horizon League victory of the 2019 season Saturday, picking up a five-set victory over reigning #HLVB champions, Green Bay.
Emily DeGeorge led the Viking offense against the Phoenix, posting a season-high 20 kills, while Trinniti Hall added 17 and Hannah Greene recorded 12. As a team, the Vikings posted a .228 hitting percentage, including a .383 clip during the fourth set.
Christina Grecol recorded 56 assists on the match along with 10 digs, marking her sixth double-double of the season.
As a team, the Vikings recorded 11 total blocks, marking the eighth time this season that they have posted 10+ blocks as a team. Individually, Hall recorded six blocks on the day, while Greene added five and DeGeorge tallied four.
After dropping the first two sets, the Vikings stormed back to pick up a 26-24 victory during the third set, and then evened the match with a 25-22 victory during the fourth set.
After forcing a fifth and deciding frame, the Vikings were able to battle back from an early deficit to tie the set at 4-4, and then rattled off five straight points to gain a 9-4 lead. During this stretch, the Vikings picked up points off of a pair of Greene kills and a Hall service ace.
Green Bay posted the next two points to put the score at 9-6, but a 6-1 run to close out the frame from the Vikings clinched the 15-7 fifth set victory for Cleveland State.
Cleveland State will return to the road for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, October 9, traveling to Wright State for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
