CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State cross country team will kickoff the 2016 season this weekend, participating in the Duquesne Duals on Saturday, September 3. The women's 5K race is slated for a 9:00 a.m. start at Schenley Oval in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Vikings, who are under the direction of 12-year head coach Joe Jaketic, will have a new look this year, as Cleveland State returns just four letterwinners from last year's squad. Included in this quartet of returning letterwinners are seniors Ashlyn Woods and Alanna Shamrock and juniors Samantha Butterbaugh and Emily Marshall.
Entering the 2016 season a trio of Vikings rank on the top-50 5K and 6K performance lists, while Woods owns Cleveland State records in both the 5K and 6K races. Woods posted a program-best 5K time of 18:35 and a program-best 6K time of 22:17 during the 2014 season, while Butterbaugh ranks 12th on the 5K list (19:05) and eighth on the 6K list (23:09) with her personal-bests and Shamrock ranks 46th with her career-best 6K time of 24:18.
Saturday's Duquesne Duals will mark the first of nine races for the Vikings this season, five of which will be run on 5K courses.
